About Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET)

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been entrusted by the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, with the task of conducting of Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET)

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an 'Institution of National Importance', has been established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the auspices of UNESCO as a Category-II Centre.

Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET)

  • BET is an All-India computer-based examination which is held once every year.
  • Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) is the national qualifying examination for award of Doctoral Research Fellowships under the DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) Programme.
  • These fellowships are tenable at any recognized university/institution in India where the selected fellow registers for Ph.D. programme.

Based on the performance in BET, two categories of merit list shall be prepared (Category-I and Category-II).

  • Category-I shall be eligible to avail fellowship at any recognized university/institution across India, where the candidate enrolls for Ph.D. Programme.
  • Category-II will be eligible to be appointed in any DBT sponsored project with fellowship equivalent to NET/GATE qualification as per current DST guidelines and/or enroll in PhD programme.

Scheme & Pattern of BET Examination

The Test will consist of Multiple-Choice Questions & will consist of two sections:

  • Shift I: 10:00 AM to 01:00 PM

Total Time Duration

  • For Non-PwD Candidates: 180 Minutes
  • For PwD Candidates: 240 Minutes

Note: - Compensatory time for PwD Candidates of 20 minutes per hour of examination.

Important Note:

  • Each question carries 03 (Three) marks in Section – A
  • Negative marking and for each incorrect response, 1 (One) mark will be deducted (Section – A)
  • Each question carries 03 (Three) marks in Section - B
  • Negative marking for each incorrect response, One (1) mark will be deducted (Section – B)
  • Un-answered/un-attempted question will be given Zero (0) mark.
  • In case more than one option is correct in a question, marks will be awarded to only those who marked any of the correct answers.
  • If none of the options is found correct or a Question is found to be wrong then the Question will be dropped. The reason could be due to human error or technical error. Full marks may be awarded to those who have attempted such question.

Eligibility & Age Limit Criteria for BET

  • Academic Qualification: Bachelors (B.E./ B.Tech./M.B.B.S) and Masters (M.Sc./ M.Tech./ M.VSc./M. Pharm./ Integrated M.Sc./ M.Tech.) in any discipline of Biotechnology, Life Sciences such as Biomedical, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Botany, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Zoology or any other allied areas of Biology/Life-Sciences.
  • Candidates admitted in any of the M.Sc./ M.Tech./ M.VSc./ M.Sc.(Agri) programmes supported under the DBT Post Graduate Teaching Programme shall be eligible to apply. Candidates who are yet to appear in the final semester examination or awaiting result of final semester shall also be eligible to apply.
  • Marks: Minimum 60% of marks for General, EWS & OBC category and 55% of marks for SC/ ST/ Differently Abled candidates in aggregate (or equivalent grade).
  • Age Limit: Up to 28 years of age as on the last date of application for General & EWS category. Age relaxation of up to 5 years (33 years) for SC/ ST/ Differently Abled/ Women candidates and upto 3 years (31 years) for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates.
  • Candidates who appeared or appearing (Result Awaited) in qualifying degree is eligible to apply.
  • Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply.

Reservations

Indian nationals belonging to certain categories (OBC-NCL, Gen-EWS, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD) are admitted under the seats reserved for them in accordance with the rules prescribed by the Government of India/State Governments.
