About Tamil Nadu– State Eligibility Test (TN-SET)

The Teacher Recruitment Board (TRB) has been entrusted by the Government of Tamil Nadu, with the task of conducting TN-SET which is a test to determine the eligibility for appointment as 'Assistant Professor' in Tamil Nadu state universities and colleges.

Examination Pattern of TN-SET

The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of objective type, Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ). There will be no break between papers.

I 50 100 03 hours (180 minutes) without any break. All the questions are compulsory. The questions in Paper I intend to assess the teaching/ research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test teaching/ research aptitude reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness of the Candidate.
II 100 200 This is based on the subject selected by the candidate and will assess domain knowledge.

Exam Shift and Time

  • Shift I: 09:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon
  • Shift II: 03:00 P.M. to 06:00 P.M.

  • For Non-PwD Candidates: 180 Minutes
  • For PwD Candidates: 240 Minutes

Note: - Compensatory time for PwD Candidates of 20 minutes per hour of examination.

Important Note:

  • Each question carries 02 (two) marks
  • For each correct response, the candidate will get 02 (two) marks
  • There is no negative marking for incorrect response
  • No marks will be given for questions un-answered/un-attempted/marked or Review
  • To answer a question, the candidate needs to choose one option as correct option
  • The medium of Question Paper shall be in English & Tamil only
  • In case of any ambiguity in translation/construction of a question in the exam, its English version shall be treated as final and the decision of TRB shall be final in this regard

Eligibility & Age Criteria for TN-SET

  • You must have a master's degree from a university recognized by the UGC.
  • Candidates from General category candidates need at least 55 percent marks, SC, SC(A), ST, PwD, and Third gender categories need at least 50 percent marks to qualify.
  • You are not allowed to round off your percentage. (54.9 percent will not be accepted as 55 percent)
  • Final Year Students: If you are currently in your final year or awaiting results, you can apply provisionally.
    • a. Condition: You must complete your degree with the required marks within two (2) years of the SET result declaration.
  • Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation only. The candidates, whose Post Graduation subject is not covered in the list of TN-SET subjects may appear in the UGC-NET/joint CSIR-UGC Test.
  • There is no upper age limit in applying for TN-SET.

Key Rules to Remember

Subject Selection: You should ideally appear for the subject of your post-graduation. If your specific subject is not listed, you can choose a related subject.

As per UGC guidelines, after June 2002, SET qualified candidates shall be eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor only in the Universities/Colleges belonging to the same state whose SET Examination they have cleared.

Unlike the NET/UGC-CSIR Combined Test the candidates who qualify the SET are eligible for being selected only as Assistant Professor and not for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
