About Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) & Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET)

  • The main objective of TRB is to ensure a free, fair, transparent recruitment and select talented candidates for teaching service.
  • The TRB was created in 1987 to recruit teachers quickly, so students have them in time. Since 1990, it has also been responsible for selecting teachers for colleges, technical education, and legal education departments in Tamil Nadu.
  • Teachers Recruitment Board has been designated as the Nodal Agency for conducting Teacher Eligibility Test.
  • As per RTE Act, 2009 & NCTE 2018 regulations laid down the minimum qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in classes I to VIII.
  • TNTET Certificate will be valid for Lifetime.
  • There will be two (2) papers of TN TET.

The medium of Question Paper

Language subjects will be respective languages. Other subjects will be in English & Tamil only.

Total Time Duration

  • For Non-PwD Candidates: 180 Minutes
  • For PwD Candidates: 240 Minutes

Note: - Compensatory time for PwD Candidates of 20 minutes per hour of examination.

Important Note:

  • Each question carries 01 (one) marks in Section A
  • For each correct response, the candidate will get 01 (one) mark in Section A
  • There will be No Negative marking
  • No marks will be given for questions un-answered/un-attempted
  • To answer a question, the candidate needs to choose one option as correct option
  • In case of any ambiguity in translation/construction of a question in the exam, its English version shall be treated as final and the decision of TRB shall be final in this regard

Eligibility for TNTET

Paper I (for Classes 1 to 5) Primary Stage

  • Higher Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known). (or)
  • Higher Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 45% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known) in accordance with the NCTE, 2002. (or)
  • Higher Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) (or)
  • Higher Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 2- year Diploma in Education (Special Education).

Paper II (for Classes 6 to 8) Secondary Stage

  • Graduation and passed or appearing in final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known). (or)
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of bachelor's in education (B.Ed.). (or)
  • Graduation with at least 45% marks and passed or appearing in final year of bachelor's in education (B.Ed.), in accordance with the NCTE (or)
  • Higher Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.). (or)
  • Higher Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of 4-year B.A/B.Sc. Ed or B.A. Ed./B.Sc. Ed. (or)
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in final year of B.Ed. (Special Education). (or)
  • Any candidate having qualified B.Ed. programme, recognized by the NCTE is eligible to appear in TNTET. Moreover, as per existing TET guidelines circulated vide NCTE letter dated 11.02.2011, a person who is pursuing any of the teacher education courses (recognized by the NCTE or the RCI, as the case may be) specified in the NCTE Notification dated 23rd August 2010 is also qualified to appear in the TNTET.

Age Criteria for TNTET

  • The candidates must be minimum of 18 years old. There is no upper age limit.

Reservation rules for TNTET

  • A minimum of 30% of the total vacancies will be reserved horizontally for Women candidates.
  • 20% of horizontal reservation shall be allotted to Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM) candidates.
  • 4% horizontal reservation shall be allotted to Differently Abled Persons candidates.
  • Reservation for Secondary Grade Teachers in
  • 3% sports persons quota will be allotted for the post Physical Education Director Grade – I
  • Transgender candidates who do not possess any community certificate may choose to be considered under Most Backward Classes.

Paper I (for Classes 1 to 5) Primary Stage

  • Child Development and Pedagogy will focus on Educational Psychology of Teaching and Learning, relevant to the age group of 6 – 11 years. They will focus on understanding the characteristics and needs of diverse learners, interaction with learners and the attributes and qualities of a good facilitator of learning.
  • Language I will focus on the proficiencies related to the Medium of Instruction. The candidate has to choose any one of the languages mentioned in Sl. No. 2 above in Paper-I table. For recruitment process candidates shall be eligible for the vacancies in the concerned medium only.
  • Language II English will focus on the elements of language, communication and comprehension abilities.
  • Mathematics and Environmental Studies will focus on the concepts, problem solving abilities and pedagogical understanding of these subjects.
  • The questions in the TNTET Paper I will be based on the topics of the prescribed syllabus of the State for Classes I – V but their difficulty level as well as linkages will be up to the Secondary Stage.

Paper II (for Classes 6 to 8) Secondary Stage

  • Child Development and Pedagogy will focus on Educational Psychology of Teaching and Learning, relevant to the age group of 11- 14 Years. They will focus on understanding the characteristics, needs and psychology of diverse learners, interaction with learners and the attributes and qualities of a good facilitator of learning.
  • Language-I will focus on the proficiencies related to the medium of instruction. The candidate has to choose any one of the languages mentioned in Sl. No.(ii) above in Paper II table. For recruitment process, candidate shall be considered for the vacancies in the concerned medium only.
  • Language II - English will focus on the elements of language, communication and comprehension abilities.
  • Mathematics and Science / Social Science will focus on the concepts, problem solving abilities and pedagogical understanding of these subjects.
  • The questions in the test Paper-II will be based on the topics of the prescribed syllabus of the State for Classes VI-VIII but their difficulty level as well as linkages will be up to the Higher Secondary (Senior Secondary) Stage.
